A few words about us:

Our group is part of the Department of Nuclear Physics at the Faculty of Physics, Warsaw University of Technology . 

History of the Group goes back to the seventies (last century), when the subject of study were the reactions of hadrons with nuclei recorded with the help of bubble chambers: the xenon and propane in collaboration with the Laboratory for High Energy (LVE) of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna . 

 

Current activities of the Laboratory is focused around a number of experiments which are in various stages of implementation and for heavy ion collisions at different energies: 

 "Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC" (Solenoidal "Pathfinder" at RHIC ) - is currently operating experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (NY, USA). Exposure and ongoing data collection and analysis of experimental data under the "Beam Energy Scan" BES for reaction Au + Au at different energies from several to tens of GeV per nucleon in the center of mass system. We participate in the measurements and in data analysis. Our interests are mainly focused on femtoscopy correlation, and recently also search for "hidden charm" (mainly mesons J / psi) in collisions of hadrons and atomic nuclei. 

 "A Large Ion Collider Experiment" (Ion Collider Experiment Great) was prepared at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, CERN, near Geneva (Switzerland / France). The first measurements were made ​​at the end of 2009. The accumulated experimental material was rich, we published the first results, and is currently preparing further publications. Analusing are collisions of protons and heavy ions (lead) at GeV energies, respectively 7000 and 2760 GeV per nucleon in the center of mass system. We participate in the analysis of data on hadron correlation and correlation femtoscopy. Our participation is also in a system for the entire database detector (Detector Construction Data Base, DCDB) - currently at the stage of exploatation. 

 This experiment is now finished, but accumulated a huge amount of measurement data is still being analyzed. We deal with the study of dynamical fluctuations in the multiplicities, transverse momentum, search for "critical point", exploring the production of resonances and jets, azimuthal angle correlations in process development and analysis of particulate emissions in time and space. 

 This experiment is a modification of the NA49 experiment. After intensive work of adaptation, implemented with the participation of our major, started the measurements and data analysis. Planned to perform a systematic analysis for different energy and different masses of the colliding ions in order to search for the transition to a state of hadron matter, the quark-gluon plasma, in particular the so-called exploration. "Critical point" and the analysis of the phase diagram. Our group participates in the NA49 experiment apparatus adapted to new conditions. A special task is to prepare our system "slow control" and to participate in data acquisition software system. First measurements have already ended and lasts for the analysis of experimental data obtained. 

For several years, we participate in the research program carried out at the Laboratory for High Energy Physics, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna (JINR) near Moscow, as members of the Polish Group in JINR. This program is related to the construction of the new collider, which will use ion beams provided by the existing accelerator called NUCLOTRON. Collider NICA (Nuclotron-based Ion Collider Facility) will allow the study of heavy-ion collisions in the area of ​​the center of mass energy approx. 10 GeV per pair of nucleons. It is the ideal measurement system for the continuation of analyzes carried out by us in experiments STAR / BES and NA61. The main detector to study heavy ion reaction is MPD (Multi Purpose Detector), in the construction of which we take an active part. We also prepare software for femtoscopic correlation analysis, which involves work on the reconstruction of the geometric and kinematic properties of nuclear collisions recorded in the detector MPD.

 

The scientific activities of the Laboratory is mainly  related to a correlation analysis of the particles (hadrons) in the small relative velocity. This area provides a unique opportunity of kinematic study of the space-time evolution process of particle emission in nuclear reactions, i.g. measuring time intervals of 10 -23 seconds and the spatial size of the order of 10 -15 meters, due to the effects of quantum statistics and final state interactions. With the joining to the NA49 and NA61 experiments our research topics covered issues directly related to the exploration and analysis of the critical point of the dynamic fluctuations. The newest theme of our work has expanded in August to search for "hidden charm" in heavy ion reactions recorded in the STAR experiment, and participation in the project "Beam Energy Scan".

Computer modeling is an integral part of the experiment to compare the experimental results with theoretical predictions. We use the existing models of heavy ion collisions e.g. QMD , UrQMD , EPOS, HIJING , hydrodynamic models, etc, cooperating with the authors of the models, we create a database with the results of modeling and the "experimental filters" to enable comparison of results of measurements with model predictions. 


The technique of physical experiment - is the second important element of the Group and focuses on concepts and practical implementation of the database design for the ALICE experiment measuring system ( Detector Construction Data-Base; DCDB ). Our task is to also develop, install and prepare the system for controlling the operation of the detector (Detector Control System, DCS) and NA61 experiment in measuring the contribution of the SPS accelerator beams at CERN.

 

International cooperation is intensively developed with many laboratories of physics in the world and is a natural consequence of participation our Group in the experiments. Every year many staff members, Ph. D. students and M.Sc. students go abroad, where they participate in the experiments. Particularly important is the cooperation with the Laboratory SUBATECH in the Ecole des Mines de Nantes, where each year a group of students from our Group spaend few weeks of holidays. Recently we have renewed a cooperation with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, where we participate in the project NICA / MPD. Other centers with whom we cooperate intensively are: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA), University of Jyvaskyla (Finland), Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, ITEP (Moscow), Bogoljubov Institute of Theoretical Physics (Ukraine).
